There is a lot of sports around the world. The following words are the basics which are commonly used by some of us.
archery – the art, sport, practice or skill of using a bow to shoot arrows.
arena – an enclosed area, often circular or oval-shaped, designed to showcase theater, musical performances, or sporting events.
athlete – a term encompassing the human competitive sports and games requiring physical skill, and the systems of training that prepare athletes for competition performance.
athletic – physically fit or strong; muscular or active.
batter – a person who’s holding a bat and waiting for the pitcher to throw the ball in baseball.
biathlon – an athletic contest combining two events, especially cross-country skiing and rifle shooting.
boomerang – a thrown tool, typically constructed as a flat airfoil, that is designed to spin about an axis perpendicular to the direction of its flight.
bowling – a sport or leisure activity in which a player rolls or throws a bowling ball towards a target.
canoeing – an activity which involves paddling a canoe with a single-bladed paddle.
cleats – an item of footwear worn when playing football.
competition – a contest held to determine the best athletes and teams and greatest achievements in sports, to improve athletic skills, and to popularize physical culture and sports.
croquet – a sport that involves hitting plastic or wooden balls with a mallet through hoops (often called “wickets” in the United States) embedded in a grass playing court.
deadlifting – part of the sport of powerlifting which is a strength sport.
decathlon – a combined event in athletics consisting of ten track and field events.
dodgeball – refers to a collection of team sports in which players on two teams try to throw balls at each other while avoiding being hit themselves.
equestrian – are sports that use horses as a main part of the sport.
field hockey – a game played on a turfed field between two teams of 11 players each whose object is to direct a ball into the opponent’s goal with a hockey stick.
free throw – an unopposed shot that is taken at the free throw line after an offensive player has been fouled while in the act of shooting.
goalie – a designated player charged with directly preventing the opposing team from scoring by intercepting shots at goal.
gymnastics – a sport that requires balance, strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, and endurance.
gymnasium – also known as a gym, is a covered location for gymnastics, athletics, and gymnastics services.
heptathlon – a track and field combined events contest made up of seven events.
inline skates – typically have two to five polyurethane wheels, arranged in a single line by a metal or plastic frame on the underside of a boot.
javelin throw – track and field event where the javelin, a spear about 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) in length, is thrown.
martial arts – any of several arts of combat and self-defense (such as karate and judo) that are widely practiced as sport.
Olympics – are leading international sporting events featuring summer and winter sports competitions in which thousands of athletes from around the world participate in a variety of competitions.
pentathlon – a contest featuring five events.
playoffs – are a competition played after the regular season by the top competitors to determine the league champion or a similar accolade.
powerlifting – a strength sport that consists of three attempts at maximal weight on three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift.
rafting – a recreational outdoor activity which uses an inflatable raft to navigate a river or other body of water.
squash – a ball sport played by two (singles) or four players (doubles squash) in a four-walled court with a small, hollow rubber ball.
teammate – anyone on your team is your teammate.
triathlon – a multisport race with three continuous and sequential endurance races like swimming, cycling, and running over various distances.
triathlete – a person who participates in the triathlon.
tug of war – a sports event in which two teams test their strength by pulling against each other on opposite ends of a rope.
ultramarathon – also called ultra distance or ultra running, is any footrace longer than the traditional marathon length of 42.195 kilometers (26.219 mi).
World Cup – an international competition held between national teams in various sports, most notably association football.
