An interjection is a word that expresses a strong emotion. It expresses emotion of joy, sorrow, excitement, wonder surprise, pain, sadness, happiness, and so on. It can be placed before or after the sentence and it is one of the eight major parts of speech in the English language.Surprisingly, it can stand alone.

There are hundreds of interjections in English. The examples below show the expressions which are usually referred to the situations most of the time. These are the common words that mostly used by people.

Ah! expressing pleasure Ah! That feels awesome.
expressing realization Ah! Now you know.
Alas! expressing grief or pity Alas! He is now divorced.
Dear! expressing surprise Dear! That’s a surprise!
expressing pity Oh dear! Are you okay?
Eh! expressing inquiry Are you sure of that, eh?
expressing surprise Eh! Really?
inviting agreement Come on, eh?
Eww! expressing disagreement Eww! I don’t like it!
Gosh! expressing hesitation Gosh! I can’t believe it!
Hello! expressing greeting Hello! Good morning!
expressing inquiry Hello! May I know your name?
Hey! calling attention Hey! Look at that!
expressing surprise or joy Hey! That’s a brilliant idea.
Hi! expressing greeting Hi! Happy birthday to you!
Hmm! expressing hesitation, doubt, or disagreement Hmm! I’m not sure.
Oh! expressing surprise Oh! This is my favorite.
expressing pain Oh! My back is aching.
expressing pleading Oh! Please stay with him.
Wow! expressing surprise Wow! You never fail them to surprise.

 

 

Sometimes, an adjective is being used as an interjection.

Example:

1.Good! You are impressive.

2. Great! You won the extreme game.

3. Nice! You are so creative.

 

Other examples of interjection are Aha, Er, Goodness, Hurrah, Oops, Ouch, Uh-oh, Uh-huh, Ugh, Yahoo, Yikes, Yuck, Yup, etc.
